Ru (Mengru) Zhou is a contemporary Chinese artist whose engagement with the arts began in her early years through traditional Chinese painting. She holds a BAA from Guangxi Arts Institute, a BFA from Central Michigan University, and, in 2023, completed her MFA at Syracuse University with distinction, becoming the first candidate to achieve this in two years.

Zhou’s work is informed by a confluence of traditional cultural influences, personal narratives, and the complexities of a multicultural environment. Her artistic practice reveals an underlying sense of insecurity, where the ambiguous nature of modern humanity and existence is both magnified and materialized. Zhou’s ongoing inquiry into the "interiority" of human nature seeks to unearth deeper truths about existence. Positioned as a feminist artist, she employs representations of the female form to investigate the dynamic between the individual and society. Her paintings, though ostensibly figurative and realist, are imbued with a profound contemplation of human complexity and the values of contemporary spiritual life. Zhou’s work regularly engages with themes of "contemporaneity and traditional media," "female identity and universal human experience," as well as "internal desires."
